Why does every school leader need to prioritise teacher training?

In the rush of curriculum improvement, parent management, board reports and the overall running of a school, it’s easy to forget the core of our institutions; our teachers. While they tend to be overlooked in terms of their needs, both personal and professional, the consequences of a “bad” teacher are felt quickly and are difficult to mitigate. When our educators are not growing, improving, learning new skills or pushing themselves, we shake the foundation of our school.

This is why teacher training is so important! However leaving it up to the teachers, to improve upon themselves on their own, is not the most effective approach. School leaders need to prioritise teacher training because it directly impacts student outcomes and fosters a more effective and engaging learning environment. By investing in teacher development, leaders can ensure their staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge to adapt to evolving educational needs, enhance their teaching strategies, and ultimately improve overall student achievement.

Here are a couple of key points as to why teacher training is crucial:

Increased Teacher Effectiveness:

  • Teacher training programs give educators new methods, tools, and techniques to enhance their teaching strategies, making them more effective in the classroom.

  • These skills mean that the overall quality of education that students are receiving increases; which can cause better student comprehension and improved learning outcomes.

Adaptation to Need and Lesson Differentiation

  • The education landscape is constantly evolving, with new technologies, research, and pedagogical approaches emerging regularly; teacher training helps educators stay updated and adapt to these changes, ensuring they are using the most effective methods available.

  • Additionally as the educational landscape evolves, so do the children being taught. The improvement of technology means we better understand the individual needs of children and training allows teachers to better differentiate their lessons to meet these individual needs.

Enhanced Teacher Well-being and Retention:

  • Well-trained teachers are more likely to feel confident, competent, and supported in their roles, which usually leads to increased job satisfaction and reduced burnout.

  • By investing in their professional development, school leaders demonstrate a commitment to their teachers, fostering a more positive and collaborative school culture.

  • Overall well-trained educators are more likely to be retained for longer in a good institution

Building a Strong School Community:

  • Investing in teacher training demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement and professionalism, fostering a culture of respect and collaboration within the school community.

  • This can lead to stronger relationships between teachers, students, and parents, creating a more supportive and positive learning environment.

Teacher training is one of the most important ways we invest in our educators, and ensure that the core of our schools - our teachers - are improving. Their growth is the catalyst for  an improved student experience.
